A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” declared the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its duties in public projects. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party called for an prompt halt in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
