The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
