Meteorologists are saying a frosty beginning to the new year, with snowfall anticipated across much of the UK. Celebrants have been told to wrap up as sub-zero temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Festive Events Proceed Despite Warnings

Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay festivities are planned to take place, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This comes despite yellow warnings for snow over northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be essential," noted the weather service.

Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Cold Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks displays, with a lack of precipitation and good visibility. Temperatures are due to be cold, making extra layers vital, according to forecasters.

To the north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to hamper visibility for seeing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Broad Weather Alerts for Friday

Heading into Friday, weather warnings are active across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

The Mercury Set to Fall Further

Going into the new year, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are set to plummet as wintry showers and strong winds are likely to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Public Health Advisories Issued

Meanwhile, amber cold health alerts have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities stated this signified the weather was likely to cause notable consequences across the NHS and care systems. This involves a expected uptick in the number of deaths among vulnerable individuals or those 65 and older.
