Crawley – 1

Tipped for Australian conditions however managed just a rare duck in both innings by an England top-order batsman in just 11 balls.

Duckett – Five

Made beginnings during each knock. His dismissal on Saturday marked the point when it began to fall apart for the English side.

Ollie Pope – 6

Appears better due to technical tweaks. Opening match of a series is usually his best, then it goes downhill. The team require him to kick on.

Joe Root – One

Far away from his maiden century in Australia. The side need the nous of their best player if they are to bounce back from this defeat.

Harry Brook – 5

His half-century during the initial knock was skittish, yet important. Awful choice in the follow-on.

Stokes – Six

Came back after being injured with a five-for, though looked out of touch when batting. Struggled while fielding in the face of Head's aggressive batting.

Jamie Smith – 4

Might possess the game to succeed in Australia, but needs to improve. Will likely face a lot of short bowling going forward.

Atkinson – 5

Involved in the impressive English first-innings bowling performance and attempted to contribute while batting later on. Among the bowlers that collapsed during the match.

Brydon Carse – Five

Similar to the previous, with added spice of getting taken apart by Head.

Jofra Archer – Five

Looked impressive while bowling initially and was the best of a bad bunch in the second. Might yet have an impact on the series.

Wood – 5

Went wicketless, but massively commendable to just get on the field given his absence.

Australia Individual Evaluations

Jake Weatherald – Six

First-timer had tough luck to face to Jofra Archer in the first innings, later played his part in the sensational run chase.

Khawaja – 3

A bizarre Test. Appeared fully fit and had periods off the pitch. Took a couple of important catches in the slips, but also looked immobile in the cordon. Gets a mark for the injury that allowed Head to open.

Labuschagne – Seven

An effective comeback to the team. Handled England's pressure better than most in the first innings, then supported Travis Head in the second.

Smith – 5

Looked off form early on. Needless before the game attack on Monty Panesar.

Head – Nine

Possibly unfair to not get a perfect score, but he attempted a pretty poor stroke initially. His follow-on century proved to be an all-time great performance.

Cameron Green – 5

Took the crucial wicket of Pope early. Shaken by a Wood short ball when he batted. Hardly required in the second half.

Alex Carey – Five

Attempted a counter-attack versus England's bowlers early in the match. Tidy behind the stumps.

Mitchell Starc – 9

Shouldered the burden of the bowling without Cummins and Josh Hazlewood achieving the first Aussie Ashes 10-for for two decades.

Scott Boland – Six

Below his best in the first innings. Improved later to trigger the England collapse.

Doggett – Six

Steady first appearance. Quite able stand-in for the main bowlers and others.

Lyon – 2

Almost a spectator during a game dominated by pace. Possibly picked up an injury when struck by Wood.
